Pegaso square cabin series (cross-shaped grille)

In 1972 Pegaso unveiled a new range of trucks distinguished by it’s Aldo Sessano designed cabin, who also designed the Seat 1200 Sport, known as bocanegra (black mouth in Spanish). When some years later this cabin was facelifted, it changed its original cross-shaped grille for a black plastic one, and as a result it is also known as bocanegra.

This new modern design cabin had generous glass area. In its first years, it didn’t feature a tilt cab. Engine access was possible by a hatch between the seats and also opening the cross-shaped grille and turning the rad like if it was a door. But access to some parts was only possible by its purposely shaped wheel arches, with the wheels turned. The engine could be extracted by opening the grille and turning the rad.

The tilt cab was released in 1975 in some models and a bit later, in the rest of the range. Engine bay access was far easier and it had a 70 degree tilt angle. The cab was tilted via a hydraulic piston that blocked automatically and therefore if the mechanism failed, it didn’t tumble:

A wide range of trucks featured this cab. In the non tilt cab models, the second digit of the truck’s designation was zero, white it was 1 in the tilt cab models:

1121, 1126 y 1127: the smallest of the square cab range, they were the evolution of the Pegaso Comet and Super Comet. They featured a narrower version of the square tilt cab, which didn’t have double headlights and featured a 6550 cc engine, of 125 CV or 135 CV in the 1121 model, 135 CV the 1126 and 155 CV turbocharged the 1127. The 1121 grossed 14200 kg while the 1126 and 1127 grossed 16800 kg.

1135, 1136 y 1145: they were the evolution of the Pegaso 1065, known as Europa. Only with tilt cab:

The 1135 model featured the 10170 cc and 170 CV engine from the Pegaso Europa or the turbocharged 10518 cc 225 CV engine. The 1136 featured the 200 CV non turbo version of this engine and the 1145 the 225 CV turbo. All of them grossed 20 tonnes.

1080, 1083, 1086, 1088 y 3088: they were heavy duty rigid trucks that equipped the 10518 cc engines previously used in the ‘cabezones’ range, 200 CV the naturally-aspirated one and 260 CV if it featured a turbocharger. The equivalent tilt cab models were, respectively: 1181, 1183 1186 1188 and 3188, some of them with the 225 CV turbo version of the 10518 cc engine and the 3188 featured the 12 litre engine.

Pegaso 1080: two axle, 20-tonne gross weight rigid truck:

The 1080/S version featured a rear lift third axle, it grossed 23 tonnes.

Pegaso 1083: three axle, twin-steer rigid, 26-tonne truck:

Pegaso 1086: twin-steer eight-wheeler (8x2), 35500 kg or 36500 kg, depending on version:

Pegaso 1088 (260 CV) y 3080 (200 ó 260 CV): three axle, 6x4 truck that grossed 26 tonnes. (3180 with tilt cab and 10.5 litre, 225 CV turbo engine):

Pegaso 3088: 8x4 twin-steer eight-wheeler, designed to work as a concrete mixer, self-loading or specialized truck. It grossed 34 tonnes:

Rigid trucks that featured the 12 litre engine:

Pegaso 1181: 4x2 rigid, 12 litre 310 CV engine.

1184: 6x2 rigid, 12 litre 310 CV engine.

1087, 1187: 8x2 rigid trucks, 12 litre 306 CV engine (306 or 310 CV for the 1187), they grossed 36250 kg and were basically a Pegaso 1086 with a bigger engine.

1190 y 3181: 6x4 rigid trucks, 12 litre 310 CV engine.

3188: 8x4 rigid truck, 12 litre 310 CV engine, 35300 Kg gross weight.

Tractors:

Pegaso 2135: it featured the 10170 cc 170 CV engine used in the Pegaso Europa, and there was also available with the Turbo 224 CV engine. Only with tilt cab.

Pegaso 2080: it featured the 10.5 litre engine, either 200 CV naturally-aspirated or 260 CV turbo (2180 with tilt cab):

Pegaso 2081: it featured the 12 litre 306 CV turbocharged engine (2181 with tilt cab):

Pegaso 2082: it featured the 12 litre 352 CV turbocharged engine (2182 with tilt cab):

Pegaso 2088 (10,5 litre, 260 CV), 2089 (12 litre, 352 CV), 2090 (12 litre, 306 CV) and 3089 (12 litre, 352 CV): 6x4 tractors designed for heavy duty haulage:

With tilt cab: 2189, 2190 and 3189.

The 12 litre 352 CV turbocharged engine was released in 1975, the most powerful European tractor back then, and it wasn’t a very big engine block. It even is an acceptable power output for today tractor trucks. There also was a 306 CV version (later, 310 CV).
